South Garland High School junior Tyrese Maxey tied the record for the most points scored by one player in a class 6A state tournament game, earning him the title of SportsDay High School Player of the Year for 2018.

Garland ISD celebrated 60-plus college-bound student athletes with L.A. Chargers safety and GHS alumnus Adrian Phillips during the district's annual ceremony.

An athletic standout not only in Garland ISD but across the state of Texas, Garland High School junior Isabel Borrego recently earned several accolades in the sport of cross country running.

Twelve elementaries and more than 1,200 fifth-grade students received the opportunity to attend high school basketball games during this year's Curtis Culwell Invitational.

Lakeview Centennial High School student Mariah Ayers broke the district record in the 200-meter dash at regionals, heading to the state track and field meet as the third-fastest qualifier.

At just 12 years old, Lyles Middle School student Carly Gates became a top scorer in volleyball and proved girls can play football, too. She also dominated on the girls basketball team.

The lively celebration featured memorabilia, selfie and polaroid stations, life-size cutouts of Johnson, and a themed food bar—complete with a cake replica of HBJ’s namesake.

Welcoming top athletes across Texas, the Curtis Culwell Center proudly hosts the 2016 UIL Volleyball State Championships Nov. 16-19.

The district’s television production studio has showcased football games since 2002, recently hitting a milestone with its 250th broadcast.
