Thirteen Garland ISD students are among the area’s newest authors. These budding bestsellers from Kimberlin and Austin Academies for Excellence won the 2020 I Write Short Stories by Kids for Kids contest.
Texas Commissioner of Education Mike Morath visited Austin Academy for Excellence, walking the same Garland ISD halls he did decades ago. In addition to meeting students and staff, he also toured several classrooms, witnessing the rigorous instruction that takes place all across GISD.

The academic excellence of Garland ISD students is gaining national attention thanks to Austin Academy for Excellence and Jackson Technology Center for Math and Science. The United States Academic Pentathlon National Competition was held last month in Omaha, Nebraska, with GISD students taking home several top prizes.
Gracie Graham bested dozens of other elementary and middle school competitors to win the district’s 2018 Spelling Bee. She spelled 26 words correctly, including the one that gave her the victory—zinnia.
