Students recognized for cybersafety-themed art

Sewell Elementary School’s Skyler Shaffer and Austin Academy for Excellence’s Jasmine John were named this year’s Cybersafety Poster Contest district winners, each receiving a sphero SPRK+ educational robot for their art pieces.

Middle schools advance to national Academic Pentathlon competition

The academic excellence of Garland ISD students is gaining national attention thanks to Austin Academy for Excellence and Jackson Technology Center for Math and Science. The United States Academic Pentathlon National Competition was held last month in Omaha, Nebraska, with GISD students taking home several top prizes.

Eighth-grader crowned Spelling Bee champion

Gracie Graham bested dozens of other elementary and middle school competitors to win the district’s 2018 Spelling Bee. She spelled 26 words correctly, including the one that gave her the victory—zinnia.

GISD schools rate in top six percent statewide

With more than 8,600 schools throughout Texas, seven from Garland ISD rate among the top six percent. Approximately 400 schools in Texas achieved a Met Standard rating and all available distinction designations. GISD’s Austin, Hillside, Kimberlin and Walnut Glen Academies for Excellence, as well as Roach and Spring Creek elementary schools and North Garland High School are among those campuses.
