Board Notes: September 27, 2016

Trustees learned about the Texas Education Agency’s recently released 2016 accountability ratings and distinction designations. They also awarded Evidence of Excellence certificates to Naaman Forest High School senior Ryan Ramirez and teachers Christine Brewer from Bussey Middle School, Sean Denny from North Garland High School and Timothy Hanhl from South Garland High School.

Trustees heard details about the new GISD Ready Wi-Fi Partners program, approved the 2016-17 budget and tax rate, and awarded Evidence of Excellence certificates to the district’s Student Nutrition Services (SNS) Department, as well as Kimberlin Academy for Excellence’s LuAnn Engleman and Sam Houston Middle School’s Debra Howard.

When Garland ISD’s new fiscal year starts Sept. 1, district employees will see an increase on their paychecks. The GISD Board of Trustees approved a 2.25-percent raise for all full-time staff, marking the eighth salary increase for employees since 2008.

Transforming bilingual education in Garland ISD, the district announced a new direction for its English Language Learners Department (ELL) during the July 19 board meeting. Bilingual LEADS, which stands for language education academic development system, aims to empower bilingual students to excel as bi-literate, bicultural, future-ready citizens. The program focuses on a late-exit model, educating students in their native language so they progress academically while acquiring English.

GISD Trustees received a recap of the district’s first year partnering with Special Olympics and heard information about the upcoming 1:1 launch. New administrative appointments include five assistant principals who will transition to principals.

AP, IB exams free for GISD students

Garland ISD offers several opportunities to start saving money during high school. In addition to dual credit classes, Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate can also reduce the number of college courses needed--and the district now pays for all AP and IB exams.
