Garland ISD announces assistance for furloughed federal employees and families

Although an announcement to reopen the government through Feb. 15 was declared the afternoon of Friday,  Jan. 25, Garland ISD is steadfast in its commitment to support families. The resources and opportunities detailed below are still available.

The Garland Independent School District is committed to supporting all families, including those federal employees who have been affected as a result of the government shutdown. Garland ISD will give immediate priority placement to furloughed federal government employees that apply and qualify for substitute positions.

“We know we have local families that have been impacted, and we want to assist them in any way we can,” stated Superintendent Dr. Ricardo López. “The strength of our families is crucial for success in school and for our communities. By providing employment for these adults, GISD students also benefit from having experienced, skilled professionals in classrooms when teachers are out. And those government employees awaiting a return to work have a flexible job opportunity to help support their families.”

Applicants must complete and submit an online employment application at www.garlandisd.net/jobs and contact the GISD Human Resources substitute office at 972-487-3067.

Candidates must meet the following criteria to serve as a substitute teacher:

  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Have a bachelor’s degree
  • Able to instruct students and manage behavior

Substitute teachers in GISD with a college degree earn $90 per day; those who also have a Texas Teacher certificate earn $105 per day.

Additionally, the district wants to make all families aware that whenever there is a change in employment or other circumstances that impact household economic status, families may apply online at any time for the Free and Reduced Price Meals program at mealapp.garlandisd.net, or they may visit GISD Student Nutrition to complete a paper application at Padgett Auxiliary Services Center at 701 North First Street in Garland.

A list of community assistance resources for food, clothing, financial, medical and dental support is also available on the district website at garlandisd.net/govtworkers.
