GISD committed to all students during COVID-19 closure

Despite being closed for the final two and a half months of the 2019-20 school year, Garland ISD has worked diligently to ensure the well-being of all students. The district dismissed for Spring Break March 6 and did not physically return to school due to COVID-19. While learning continued online, many students did not have internet access or technology devices. That’s why GISD distributed more than 18,000 Chromebooks in March. The district also mailed thousands of packets of paper learning materials to students as well. Still, several remained unreachable.

GISD started its COVID-19 closure with 2,837 students who did not make contact after Spring Break. Unwilling to lose touch or leave students without support, teachers, campus administrators and district staff teamed together to make phone calls, send emails, and even conduct socially distant home visits. That number has now been whittled down to just 88 students. And, outreach efforts will not stop over the summer. GISD is committed to the social, emotional, academic and overall health of every student.
