As we head into the final week before the start of school, our amazing Garland ISD staff is busy preparing for your return. The 2020-21 school year will look and feel different, but we are all in this together. The Texas Education Agency has asked school districts to introduce a learning management system this year, and GISD has chosen Canvas.
Our new Canvas system will help students navigate all of their learning from one location. Assignments, grades, secure links to Google Meets for live class sessions, and communication with teachers and classmates will all be accessed from the Canvas homepage after logging in. We know our students are very comfortable with technology, and we feel confident that they will find Canvas an easy tool to use.
To ensure you are ready for the first four weeks of remote learning, please review the timeline below for important back-to-school information.
August 3-7: Campus staff will be participating in extensive professional development to prepare for virtual and blended instruction. Families can also prepare by visiting our Canvas for Families webpage, which includes helpful documents and video resources. Student schedules will be finalized during this week as well, and campuses will be communicating with families regarding specific dates and times for technology distribution.
August 6: Student schedules will be available in Skyward for families who have completed Back-to-School Forms. To complete these forms, primary guardians should log in to Skyward Family Access. Please note that student schedules are subject to change during these uncertain times, depending on teacher availability.
August 7: Students and parents/guardians can log in to Canvas for the first time. If you have trouble logging in, please contact email@example.com for technical assistance. All schools will also host virtual Meet the Teacher events through Canvas to help families get acquainted with the new system. Campuses will be communicating with families regarding specific dates and times for virtual Meet the Teacher events.
August 8-9: GISD staff will be available for Canvas technical support. Specific hours will be shared on the Canvas for Families webpage.
August 10: Celebrate #GarlandISD1stDay by tagging remote back-to-school snapshots on social media! We want to ensure our families have a smooth transition to remote learning, so all students will follow a transitional schedule for the first four weeks of school. While daily attendance, grading and GPA policies will be in effect, including policies for late work, GISD staff will help students adjust to their new schedules, learn procedures and establish a successful academic routine.
After our first four weeks of school, on September 8, we know that GISD students and staff will have the firm foundation needed to transition to face-to-face learning environments or continue learning remotely. While this pandemic has taught us that plans are always subject to change, we will be ready to meet any challenges that come our way. You can rest assured that we will continue to communicate with you regularly regarding all plans.
