Garland ISD’s Student Nutrition Services (SNS) is not only making an impact in cafeterias districtwide. The innovative group is also racking up nods across the state and nation. SNS recently received an Excellence in Summer Meals Gold Level Sponsor distinction and a Texas Department of Agriculture Best of the Bunch Award. These prestigious recognitions speak to the hard work SNS staff dedicate to school meals year-round.
To obtain a Gold Level Sponsor, the Texas Hunger Initiative and the Food Research & Action Center evaluated the district’s summer meals program by conducting site visits and interviews, meal plan reviews, and more. In addition to a certificate, a spotlight in a Sponsor Council meeting and marketing materials, the title also grants local, state and national recognition through partner organizations.
“Congratulations on a wonderful program. Your food quality was among some of the best in this year’s [group], with lots of offerings of fresh fruits and veggies; a mix of hot and cold items; as well as significant efforts around menu creation—including children in the process,” expressed the evaluation statement. “Your staff was an asset and big proponents of the program. Terrific work!”
SNS’s commitment to the Farm Fresh Challenge, which showcases Texas-grown produce in school cafeterias, made it a frontrunner for a Best of the Bunch designation.
“Thank you for the outstanding dedication shown by you and your staff during the 2017 Farm Fresh Challenge. Your students have learned lifelong lessons about healthy Texas products and the farmers and ranchers who grow them,” stated Food and Nutrition Assistant Commissioner Angela Olige. “You are one of the greatest resources we have for ensuring we keep the Lone Star State on the path to a healthier future.”
SNS will be recognized at the inaugural Business of Numbers and Nutrition award ceremony June 14-15 in Austin.
