For a student recovering from a severe illness or procedure, missing school means far more than falling behind on assignments. It means missing out on group discussions, cafeteria conversations, and the daily interactions that define the campus experience.

Reggie, a VGO remote-controlled robot provided through a regional partnership with Region 10 Education Service Center, provides a real-time bridge back into the classroom.

Controlled remotely from an iPad, the motorized device rolls into classrooms, navigates hallways, and sits directly at a student's desk as a physical stand-in.

Equipped with a live camera, screen, and speaker, Reggie lets homebound students see, hear, and talk with their teachers and classmates throughout the day.

While the technology delivers direct daily instruction, district leaders emphasize that its greatest value lies in preserving personal connections.

"The biggest benefit to the robot is that the student using it gets to attend every single class, and get all of the same direct instruction as everyone else, and have access to their peers," said Dr. Wendy Brower, GISD Section 504 Coordinator.

By joining daily lessons, students keep pace with their coursework while staying socially engaged with their friend groups.

Reggie even lets homebound students participate in extracurricular clubs or join virtual lunch sessions in the classroom.

"This robot will come into your classroom and act as a student. So that way, the student on the other end will have the device to be able to see and be a part of the instruction," Webb Middle School Assistant Principal Brandi Dawson told staff, as they were trained on the robot.

Schedules run through standard school hours, with flexibility built in for special campus activities.

Staff members accompany Reggie to assemblies and pep rallies so homebound students can share in campus traditions and celebrations.

When evening programs occur, operators adjust schedules so students can attend club meetings or performances remotely.

The device can also join off-site learning opportunities whenever destination facilities offer stable Wi-Fi connections.

"For example, one of the other robots that we have deployed at another campus, their class will be going to the Perot, and that's definitely one that the robot could go to, so the student can participate," Dr. Brower noted.

The robot at Webb Middle School represents part of a broader fleet deployed across multiple district campuses and other districts in Region 10.

Through this ongoing partnership with Region 10 ESC, Garland ISD continues expanding support for homebound students.
