Garland ISD has been named the 2026 H-E-B Texas District of the Year, earning a $100,000 award and statewide recognition for its work to support students, educators and the communities it serves.

The honor was announced May 3 during the H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards ceremony in Houston. Garland ISD was selected from five large school district finalists across Texas.

H-E-B evaluates school districts based on their commitment to student achievement through innovative programs, parent and community involvement, and professional development opportunities for teachers and administrators.

"This recognition reflects the work of thousands of people who come together every day to create opportunities for our students," said Superintendent Dr. Ricardo López. "Our teachers and staff are the heart of Garland ISD, and this award reflects their commitment, innovation, and belief in what is possible for every student. I am incredibly proud of our entire GISD family."

For more than 125 years, Garland ISD has grown alongside the communities it serves. That history is reflected in a district that continues to adapt, expand and create new possibilities for students.

Today, Garland ISD serves more than 53,000 students across Garland, Rowlett and Sachse. Through its Choice of School model, students can pursue specialized learning experiences beyond their neighborhood campus, including magnet programs, P-TECH, Early College High School, College for All and career and technical education pathways.

The district also works closely with families, community organizations and businesses to connect students with experiences and resources that extend beyond the classroom. These partnerships help strengthen the connection between schools and the communities they serve.

Supporting students starts with supporting the educators who serve them. Garland ISD provides professional learning and leadership development opportunities that help teachers, campus leaders and administrators continue to grow throughout their careers.

The district is also investing in learning environments that support students and staff. Garland ISD voters approved the 2023 Bond Program, which includes improvements to facilities, safety, infrastructure and technology, as well as Multi-Program Activity Centers at each of the district's seven high schools.

The H-E-B recognition adds another milestone to Garland ISD's 125-year history and celebrates the people who have helped shape the district into what it is today.

"This award is a reflection of what happens when we come together around a shared purpose," López said. "We will continue learning, growing and finding new ways to serve our students and communities."

Garland ISD enters its next chapter with the same commitment that has guided the district for generations: helping every student discover what is possible and giving them the support to pursue it.
