A community mentorship program at Liberty Grove Elementary is supporting fifth-grade students as they prepare for the transition to middle school. Through the Great Gator Mentorship Program, students meet with volunteer mentors during lunch over six weeks, building relationships and gaining guidance in a structured, school-based setting.

The initiative is part of the Garland ISD Faith-Based Partnership Council, a district effort led by the Family and Community Engagement (FACE) Department that connects local faith-based organizations with schools to support students, families, and campus needs. At Liberty Grove, mentors from First United Methodist Church of Sachse are partnering with the campus through this initiative.

School counselor Brittany McKay coordinated the program at the campus level, aligning community volunteers with student needs and organizing the structure that allows mentorship sessions to take place during the school day.

Mentors meet with students once a week in the cafeteria. The lunchtime setting provides a relaxed environment where students can talk openly while remaining on campus during instructional time. Over several weeks, these recurring meetings help students build trust and become comfortable with their mentors.

The program centers on social and emotional development rather than academics. Conversations often focus on topics such as friendship, kindness, leadership, responsibility, and managing emotions. These discussions give students opportunities to reflect, ask questions, and strengthen interpersonal skills that support their overall development.

Designed for fifth graders, the program helps ease the transition to sixth grade by providing consistent adult guidance. The presence of a mentor can help students navigate change, build confidence, and feel more prepared for a new campus environment.

In some cases, mentors may continue working with students as they move into middle school, giving them a familiar face during another important transition.

Through the Great Gator Mentorship Program, Liberty Grove Elementary is expanding opportunities for student connection and support. The collaboration between campus staff and community volunteers reflects a shared commitment to helping students grow, adapt, and succeed both in and out of the classroom.
