New for 2026-27

Every student needs a badge

Starting in the 2026–27 school year, student ID badge requirements will expand district-wide:

  • All students, including those in grades PreK–5, will be required to wear ID badges.
  • Students must scan their badge when boarding and exiting a school bus, including for field trips.

We’re sharing this now so families have time to prepare for the new school year. More details about badge distribution will be communicated through your campus ahead of the first day of school.

Every Garland ISD student — from Pre-K through 12th grade — is required to wear a student ID badge on campus. Badges are a core part of how we keep our schools safe, organized, and running smoothly every day.

Why badges matter

Your student's ID badge does more than identify them. It's a tool that supports safety and access across the school day.

On campus, badges allow staff to quickly verify that every person in a building belongs there. During an emergency or student reunification, this matters enormously. Badges also make everyday routines faster — cafeteria purchases, library checkouts, textbook access, and extracurricular participation can all be tied to a student's ID.

On the bus, badges serve as each student's boarding pass. Students scan their badge when getting on and off any district bus — including field trip transportation. Only students assigned to a route may board that bus. This gives the district an accurate, real-time picture of who is on board at all times.

Bus scanning & parent notifications

Our district uses the Stopfinder app to help parents track bus location. Badge scanning adds a new layer: parents will now receive a notification when their student scans onto or off of the bus. This means you'll know not just where the bus is — you'll know your child is on it.

Students must ride their assigned bus. If a student attempts to board a route they are not assigned to, they will not be permitted to ride.

What parents should know

  • Badges must be worn daily. Make it part of your morning routine — badge on before heading out the door.
  • No badge, no bus. Students without a badge will not be permitted to board.
  • Lost or damaged badges: The first replacement is provided at no cost. Additional replacements are $5 each. Treat the badge like any other essential school item.
